August is here!

Hard to believe it's already August! We started school this past week. I am now the proud mom of a 9th grader, 8th grader, 4th grader and 2nd grader. We decided to get an early start since we'll be taking several mini-vacations this next school year. Steve is going to be off the last couple of weeks in August, too. We plan to go to South Dakota during that time and see Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands and Black Hills. We are loving our curriculum. We've used a literature-based curriculum for our history and reading studies for years. Here's a link if you're interested: www.sonlight-curriculum.com. It's so rewarding sharing interesting reading through biographies, historical fiction and just great lit. with the kids.

A friend and I went to the Grand Forks homeschool meeting downtown this morning, to represent the base families. (about 16 families just on base) There are some exciting things happening with that group--almost too much to be involved in! We are looking at getting into a 4H group. Someone is also offering horseback riding lessons. We'll be participating in a geography fair and bee this winter, and Grace and Gabriel will have their first try at a spelling bee. On base, we continue to have support from the Services Squadron who will be holding PE classes at the Youth Center, swimming lessons at the indoor pool, and skate and bowling days. Another hs family will be offering choir again for the kids. Wow! Makes me tired. We definitely won't have time for all those activities, but it's nice to know the support is there. It's funny, suddenly I am the old 'veteran homeschooler'. I don't necessarily like that role, but as Steve pointed out to me today, we've been homeschooling since 1995, so I guess I am getting old and crusty. (no comments please!)

This was supposed to be short. I'll update with more photos later! Have a good week!
